Lan Wangji frowns. Everyone should have faith in the Yiling Patriarch. The Yiling Patriarch is always fair, and that means his rules and the Lan rules can’t be that different. “Can I visit you again?”

The Yiling Patriarch beams at him so brightly that Lan Wangji’s breath catches. “Yes! Come visit me, Lan Zhan. But you have to wait until you’re grown, okay? For decency’s sake.” He laughs, and Lan Wangji isn’t sure why.

“When will I be grown?” Lan Wangji wants to be clear.

“Hmm.” The Yiling Patriarch looks skyward, rubbing his nose thoughtfully. “…Twenty? Let’s say twenty. Your uncle shouldn’t have too much of a qi deviation about that. How’s that sound?”

Lan Wangji frowns, but nods anyway. It’s a very long time, but he supposes that’s how all the Yiling Patriarch stories are. You can’t win anything worth having without fighting for it yourself. “I will be here.”

“I look forward to it, Lan Zhan,” the Yiling Patriarch, smiling and tugging gently at Lan Wangji’s hair one last time before sending him away to the other side of the barrier—to his brother and uncle.

It takes him a couple of hours, but he eventually finds the perfect victim. Said victim is innocently standing in a garden admiring the flowers, and has no idea what level of little brother nonsense is about to hit him. Poor thing.

“So, Xichen-ge, I hear your brother is planning to run away and marry the Yiling Patriarch,” Nie Huaisang casually declares. He’s always felt more comfortable hassling Lan Xichen than he has Lan Wangji, anyway. “What’s that about?”

Lan Xichen sighs and suddenly looks very tired. “It was cute when he was eight.”

Wow. Just wow. “How did he even meet the Yiling Patriarch when he was eight?”

Oh, that was a bad question, because Lan Xichen’s eyes just iced over like a Gusu winter. Nie Huaisang will just have to pry the details of that ugly story from someone else. “Never mind!” he cries. “It doesn’t matter. At least Senior Wei is nice.”

Lan Xichen frowns at him in confusion. “Senior Wei? Your father’s friend, Senior Wei?”

Oh good. At least Nie Huaisang isn’t the only one who didn’t know. “My father’s friend, Senior Wei, who is the Yiling Patriarch. Yes.”

He’s never seen Lan Xichen gape before. This is a shockingly exciting day in the Cloud Recesses.

scooby gang juniors, actual title some 'Never Love An Anchor' lyrics bc thats the theme song of this fic, is actually the first longfic i ever started writing! it has also been a WIP for mmm. four years or so. i started writing it right after watching the untamed for the first time in 2019 lmao, but never finished it because at that point id never written ANYTHING as long as it was gearing up to be (the outline is 20k). i hope to finally finish it and post it some time soon, probs after WINR and the ZZL&YQY fics are done. its probs some of my fav writing ive ever done but never shared with anyone haha

summary: Wei Wuxian may have drafted a ritual for willingly bringing someone back from the dead somewhere in his madness in the caves of the Burial Mounds, but if he did it was never found. In the absence of a convenient literal ghost from the past to help exact his revenge, Nie Huaisang turns to the next best thing: his old friend's son.

Meanwhile, Lan Sizhui finds a man buried deep underground with soft, familiar eyes.

[Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, Jin Ling, Ouyang Zizhen, and Wen Ning go on a life changing field trip, dodge their worried parents, and dig up some corpses, in approximately that order.]

“When I realized how deeply affected by the Yiling Patriarch Hanguang-Jun was, I began to realize where this slip in righteousness had come from. You see, while I and the rest of the cultivation world believed that Lan Wangji had been in secluded cultivation for three years to move to a new level in his cultivation, or because he had been wounded fighting the Yiling Patriarch, the truth is much the opposite. Hanguang-Jun was in seclusion as punishment, for siding with the Yiling Patriarch at the Siege of the Burial Mounds. All along, these famed enemies had secretly been allied.”  Jin Guangyao shook his head, expression deeply sympathetic even as the cultivators of the room began to turn to Hanguang-Jun. Hands went to swords, only remaining undrawn due to the thick tension in the room that had yet to break. Hanguang-Jun stood immovable through it all, flawless as jade and cold as ice.  “I believe the Yiling Patriarch must have altered his mind, and had been using his demonic arts to corrupt him as far back as the Sunshot campaign. Now, with the feared patriarch dead, it seems this would no longer be such an issue. But Wei Wuxian left one final plan even after his death, a fail-safe to bring ruin to the cultivation world once again even when he was long gone, and he entrusted that plan to Hanguang-Jun before his death.”  At last, his eyes met Sizhui’s again. Sizhui’s mouth tasted electric, the buzz of the room crashing into him in waves even as it narrowed just to himself, his uncle at his back, his father, and the man before him. He inhaled through his nose and straightened, perfect Lan posture and the ribbon on his forehead proudly on display. He narrowed his eyes back at Jin Guanyao and did not drop his gaze. Jin Guangyao smiled, a flicker of amusement, before he regained his expression of earnest concern to address the crowd.  “I found proof in the records of the Wen work camps, and writings recovered from the Nightless City. You see, Lan Sizhui, ward of Hanguang-Jun and First Disciple of Gusu Lan, was neither a war orphan nor a poorly concealed bastard, but instead a child smuggled out of the Burial Mounds before the siege.”  Jin Guangyao swept a sleeve over Sizhui’s group.  “Honored cultivators, I stand before you to reveal the surviving heir of the Qishan Wen Sect. Called Lan Sizhui but born Wen Yuan, the son of Wen Xu and his first concubine. Cousin of the Ghost General, and former ward of the Yiling Patriarch, already beginning the work of reviving the Wen and overwhelming the righteous sects with demonic cultivators.”  In the chaos, only one voice cut so bitingly through the noise. Calm and cold and sure, Sizhui latched onto it with all his heart. Anything to avoid looking behind him, at the friends he had lied to.  “So you admit it.” Said Hanguang-Jun, unmoving from his spot amidst the Lan. Jin Guangyao blinked wide eyes at him.  “I’m sorry?”  Hanguang-Jun stepped forward. Even with his name being almost literally dragged through the mud, cultivators still parted around him with automatic deference.  “You admit you knew children were being tortured, in your work camps.”

An insistent thought was buzzing in Lan Qiren’s mind, just out of reach. He furrowed his eyebrows, trying to focus on it. Soon enough, he realized that he actually knew who had planted them there; it must have been Wei Wuxian, probably as a memento of the Lotus Pier.

But why would he do that? There had been no connection between the Yunmeng Jiang sect and him for years now, he had cut all the ties, just as his former sect had done. Why would he make the effort to make lotus flowers bloom in such a desolate place as the Burial Mounds? And how did he achieve it in the first place? Lan Qiren found it hard to believe that using demonic cultivation could be any good for anything alive, flowers included. So had Wei Wuxian just taken the time to grow them normally? With hard labour and fighting against nature itself and the resentful energy alike?

Lan Qiren could not understand anything anymore as he was watching the withered flowers swaying gently in the wind, as if unbothered by its fierce and ice cold nature.

Suddenly, he noticed that there was one flower stuck up the dead tree next to the flower bed. It was odd enough how it had managed to get all the way up there, not even talking about staying in place. Lan Qiren was intrigued for no apparent reason. Something was just not right with this image.

Upon more intent observation, he could see something resembling a human hand holding the flower in place. The hand was small, the size of a child’s hand really and it distressed Lan Qiren even more. Of course he had heard stories about Wei Wuxian even raising fierce corpses who had been children in their previous life, but he had never seen one himself. It was revolting.

And then it hit him. Why would a fierce corpse be holding a flower? And so gently too? He had never heard about anything like this.

Despite himself and the situation he had all but forgotten about for the moment, he stretched his senses all the way to the hollow tree where the child – whoever or whatever it was – was hiding. He blocked everything else away, he could no longer hear the noises the cultivators had been making and all he could see was that single withered lotus flower and the hand holding it.

Suddenly, he thought he could hear silent sobs and desperate calls of ‘Xian-Gege!’. His heart skipped a beat. It could not be; it was simply impossible. His senses were just deceiving him. Or perhaps the Yiling Patriarch was actually playing a trick on him. It just could not be that there was a child in the Burial Mounds, because what he was seeing and also the voice clearly pointed only to one reality. There was a child, a living one, hidden inside that hollow tree.

The series Lotus Flower began as a stand-alone story, Withered Lotus Flower. The premise is that Lan Qiren notices a withered lotus flower above the ground in a dead tree. He then notices a child's hand holding the flower, and the history of the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds suddenly takes on an entirely different turn from canon.

Over the series, Author Mydla builds on this stand-alone story through seven additional short stories that move from the immediate aftermath of the Siege through a period of three years. There is hope at the end of this first story that continues through the rest of the series. There are themes of recovery and guilt. As in canon, Lan Wangji is not present at the Second Siege because he's in seclusion as part of his punishment. The Wen, on the other hand, experience a different outcome, as does Wei Wuxian. There are problems along the way, and unpleasant truths are revealed.

The stories are a reflection of Lan Qiren's thoughts as he faces his past and where he wants to be in the future. In the final story everyone is in a much better place than the first. A happy, satisfying ending to tragedy averted because of a single lotus flower.

What is the work you've made with the angstiest ending? - Fic: All my fics are neutral or positive endings (I think?) - Vid: this TKEM AU where Yeong dies - Podfic: I enjoy narrating big emotions so I have a lot of people-cry-in-this-fic grief/angst and self worth issues stories but often they end on at least an uplifting note. Possibly something in Attack on Titan or X-Men had a and-they-stay-sad ending but I can’t remember something specific to for-sure point at.

What's the work you've made with the happiest ending? So many happy endings (both the emotional kind and the porn kind). I’m not sure I could point to a ‘happiest’ since a lot of them are very happy.

Do you get hate on your works? I’ve had some weird comments but not particularly hate, hopefully that will continue to be true.

Do you create smut? Yup, at least with podfic and fic.

Craziest crossover? I wrote a heralds of valdemar / lord of the rings fic when I was just starting out in fandom.

Have you ever had a work stolen? I hope not.

Have you ever had a work inspired by your works? Very excitingly, people have made vids inspired by my vids which is the absolute coolest thing (Nothing by @nubreed73, and Mei Changsu is Climbing the Mountain by @sandalwoodbox)

What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? I’ve got a variety of old files for fics I never got a permission response on that will just live in my computer forever. Some are complete, some needing editing, some are partially completed and all abandoned due to lack of response. I learned my lesson and now do not record unless I have already received permission or the author has BP.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? For podfic I try! Sometimes I don’t know what I don’t know (see past mispronunciation of French where I thought I knew what I was doing T_T). But having been in into anime, c-dramas, k-dramas, and a variety of fandoms with various languages involved I know I will give it my best shot, possibly fail, and it will take me 2-3x as long to record, but sometimes I can be proud of what I’ve come up with on the far end and that’s nice. Forvo, google translate, and finding friends/acquaintances I know who speak the language have all be helpful.

As scary as Wei Wuxian is, what with all the raising armies of the dead, icing people to bits, etc...Nie Huaisang is the one who's truly horrifying. How long, how patiently he pursued vengence for his brother! He never stopped, never gave up, never lost sight if his endgame. He even brought the Yiling Paatriarch back from the dead!

Meanwhile, our easygoing Yiling Patriarch is at home, happily baking hideously spicey cookies, and going: "Ok! Horrifying events are over! Yay! Lan Zhan, it's Tuesday, am i picking the baby up from Tiny Cultivator Tots Daycare or are you?" And actually it's Lan Yuan who is picking up his baby brother, because Lan Zhan has a meeting he can't get out of with Sect Leader Yao, and Wei Ying's sword is in the shop for repairs again.

This is an @arisprite appreciation post that I’ve been meaning to do for a while. These are all pieces they’ve done to illustrate my fics (most of which I commissioned, which is one of my most favorite uses of money to date) and every single one delights me so, so much. Even if I have an idea in my head of what I’m asking for, I’m always thrilled by the detail and character that comes through in the final art.

He had always found little activities like this to be both entertaining and relaxing, and it was one of the things he could do that wouldn’t get him into trouble with Lan Qiren. Of course, with adept hands like Wei Wuxian’s, it didn’t take him any long amount of time to learn cross stitching, eventually skilled enough to sow not only birds and trees but sceneries of the Cloud Recesses, even. As long as he visited the place himself, he could more or less stitch the image in his mind onto the cloth and it would look like it was done by a professional.

Wei Wuxian laughs as he admired the canvas that has begun to form distinct patterns of his intention—the turtle’s shape was almost done, as well as the cave. When he was about to stitch the outline of Lan Wangji, he feels fingers closing around his head to make him look up, his eyes meeting two pools of honey-golden shades too beautiful to be a mortal’s eyes. He knew those eyes since he was very young; the first time he was charmed by it, he still had no idea why he was so attracted to Lan Wangji when everyone else was praising and gloating over Gusu Lan’s first Jade. But… now, it no longer matters why. Another burst of light-hearted giggles pours from his lips when Lan Wangji places a kiss between his eyes. ❝It tickles! It tickles, Lan Zhan.❞ Laughing, he drops both the canvas and needle, tossing them next to him before hopping into the other’s arms, fully expecting himself to be caught. Despite being a touchy person, whenever Lan Wangji’s fingers press on certain spots on him, it never fails to send a jot of electricity through his veins that sends him squirming uncontrollably as if he’s being attacked by a dozen feathers tickling his sides.

It seemed the other man already knew where he was ticklish the most: under his sash, slightly below the side of his waist. Quickly, he tries to wriggle himself out of the other’s grasp, but it was too late! ❝Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan! Don’t you dare! Aha—Ahahahaha!! Stop, stop! I’m gonna die. Who are you being so mean?! I don’t know you at all—-ahahahahahaahahaha. Lan Zhan! Lan Wangji! Hanguang-Jun! You are so bad!❞ He hopes after this is over, Lan Wangji should expect a full session of kisses that’s just as ticklish!
